SANDY, Utah (Wednesday, January 3, 2018) – Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel announced on Wednesday that the club has signed FW Alfredo Ortuño ahead of the 2018 season. He will join the club in preseason, pending receipt of his ITC and visa. RSL used Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) in the signing.
“I’m very happy to be signing with Real Salt Lake and very excited to live in America,” Ortuño said. “It’s a great opportunity for me to continue to grow as a player in a challenging environment.”
Ortuño, 26, already has a lengthy career in Spain’s first and second divisions, most recently playing with Cádiz CF in La Liga 2, where he scored 17 goals in 40 appearances in the 2016/17 season. Since making his professional debut with Albacete in the Spanish second division at just 17 years old in 2008, he has netted 41 goals in 141 matches at that level. That included stops with Albacete, Lorca FC, Girona, Las Palmas, Zaragoza, Mallorca and Cádiz in the second division and a stint with Granada in La Liga.
“He has a proven track record of scoring goals at a high level in Spain,” Waibel said. “We believe he can come in, challenge the status quo and continue to push to make our team better.”
A native of Yecla, Spain, Ortuño joins a list of players that Real Salt Lake has used TAM to acquire or retain that includes MF Javier Morales, MF Kyle Beckerman, FW Joao Plata, DF Marcelo Silva.
